Description

Siamese Algae Eater (Crossocheilus oblongus)

The Siamese Algae Eater is a sleek, hardworking species native to the flowing rivers and streams of Southeast Asia, including parts of Indonesia. It is often confused with the "Flying Fox" or the "False Siamese Algae Eater," but the true Crossocheilus oblongus is unique because its black horizontal stripe extends all the way through the tail fin and has "zig-zag" edges rather than smooth ones. They are energetic, social, and peaceful, making them a "must-have" for any planted aquarium.

Minimum Tank Size: 100L+ (They are active swimmers)

The "Algae Specialist"

The SAE is one of the few fish that will actively consume Black Brush Algae (BBA) and Staghorn Algae. However, as they get older, they can sometimes become "lazy" and prefer to wait for fish flakes or pellets.

  • Pro Tip: To keep them focused on algae, don't overfeed the other fish in the tank.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

SAEs are peaceful and can be kept in groups or as single specimens, though they are much more active and confident in groups of 3 or more. They are excellent tank mates for Neon Blue Acaras, Rasboras, and Angelfish. They occupy the bottom and middle layers, constantly grazing on surfaces.

Caution: Because they are so fast and active, they might annoy very slow-moving or shy fish (like Discus) during feeding time.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Oxygenation: They come from moving water and appreciate a moderate current and high oxygen levels.

  • Plants & Driftwood: These provide the surfaces where algae grow. Broad-leafed plants like Anubias or Amazon Swords are their favorite "buffet" tables.

  • Secure Lid: Essential. SAEs are notorious jumpers, especially when startled or during the night.

  • Flat Stones: They enjoy resting on flat surfaces (like stones or large leaves) when they aren't busy grazing.

Why Choose the Siamese Algae Eater?

The SAE is the "utility player" of the aquarium. It isn't just a pet; it’s a functional tool for maintaining a beautiful aquascape. If you are struggling with hair algae or BBA, there is no better biological solution. Plus, their playful "wiggling" swimming style adds a lot of character to the lower half of the tank.
