Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas)

The Scopas Tang, also known as the Brown Tang or Brushtail Tang, is the understated "workhorse" of the Zebrasoma family. While its cousins like the Yellow Tang or the Gem Tang take the spotlight for their loud colors, the Scopas is prized for its sophisticated, earthy gradient and its legendary appetite for nuisance algae. It is one of the hardiest and most functional Tangs you can add to a reef system.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Scopas Tang, Brown Tang, Brushtail Tang

  • Scientific Name: Zebrasoma scopas

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands)

  • Max Size: 15–20 cm (approx. 6–8 inches)

  • Lifespan: 10–15+ years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward other Zebrasoma

  • Diet: Herbivore – Master of algae control

  • Care Level: Easy (One of the hardiest Tangs)

Appearance & Identification

The Scopas is a master of the "ombré" effect:

  • The Gradient: The body starts with a pale, silvery-grey or greenish-white face that smoothly transitions into a deep chocolate brown or black tail.

  • The Texture: Its body is covered in a fine "pinstripe" or "stippled" pattern of tiny dots and lines that become visible under high-quality reef lighting.

  • The Silhouette: It has the classic, disk-shaped body and high-reaching dorsal and anal fins characteristic of all Zebrasoma species.

  • The "Brush": It gets its name "Brushtail" from a small patch of "bristles" near the tail spine (caudal peduncle) that develops as it matures.

Behaviour: The "Algae Machine"

  • Efficiency: If you have a hair algae problem, the Scopas is your solution. They are less "picky" than many other Tangs and will constantly graze on rocks, glass, and even equipment.

  • Aggression: Like the Yellow Tang, it can be bossy. It will likely defend its grazing territory against other Tangs. If you plan to keep multiple Zebrasoma, it is best to add them simultaneously or ensure the Scopas is the smallest.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are arguably one of the best fish for a reef tank because they keep the "foundation" clean for coral growth.

  • Hardiness: They are much more resistant to "Ich" and "Velvet" than the Powder Brown or Acanthurus species, making them a great first Tang for a new hobbyist.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 285L (75 Gallons). They need plenty of horizontal room to swim and "bolt" if they feel threatened.

  • Rockwork: Provide large amounts of live rock. This acts as both a hiding place and a "farm" where their natural food (algae) can grow.

  • Diet: While they are excellent grazers, you must supplement their diet with dried Nori (seaweed) daily to prevent Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE). They also enjoy spirulina-enriched flakes and pellets.

  • Flow: They appreciate moderate-to-high flow, which mimics the reef flats they inhabit in the wild.

Why Choose the Scopas Tang?

The Scopas Tang is for the hobbyist who values function and subtle elegance. It doesn't distract from your colorful corals; instead, it provides a dark, sophisticated backdrop while working 24/7 to keep the tank pristine. It is a "bulletproof" utility fish with a ton of personality.
