Description
Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum)
The Sailfin Tang is one of the most majestic and "architectural" fish in the marine hobby. Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the waters right here in Indonesia, it is famous for its massive dorsal and anal fins that, when fully extended, more than double the height of the fish. While they are peaceful and hardworking algae-eaters, they are the largest of the Zebrasoma genus and require a massive amount of "runway" to thrive.

Appearance & Identification
The Sailfin is a masterpiece of stripes and scale:
-
The "Sails": It has oversized dorsal and anal fins. When the fish is startled or displaying, it fans these out, creating a stunning, circular silhouette.
-
The Pattern: Features vertical alternating bands of dark brown, charcoal, and creamy yellow. As they age, they develop intricate glowing blue and gold dots on their snout and underbelly.
-
The Tail: A yellow-to-white tail that becomes more spotted as the fish matures.
-
The Scalpel: Like all surgeonfish, it has a sharp white spine at the base of its tail for defense.
Behaviour & Tank Compatibility
-
The Workhorse: This is a top-tier utility fish. They spend almost every waking second picking at rocks, glass, and sand, consuming hair algae and film algae.
-
Mannerisms: They are generally more peaceful than the Purple Tang or Sohal Tang. However, they are highly territorial toward other Zebrasoma species (like the Yellow Tang) unless the tank is massive.
-
Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are beneficial for coral health by keeping algae from outcompeting the polyps.
-
Tank Mates: Excellent with Clownfish, Wrasses, Anthias, and Angelfish. If adding other tangs, try to choose ones with different body shapes, like a Kole Tang or a Naso Tang.
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: Because they grow to nearly 40 cm and are very active, a minimum of 475L (125 Gallons) is required for a juvenile, but 680L+ (180+ Gallons) is necessary for an adult.
-
Swimming Space: They need "unobstructed" swimming lanes. Avoid cluttered rockwork in the middle of the tank; keep the rocks to the sides and back to create a large open "arena."
-
Water Flow: They thrive in high-flow, high-oxygen environments. They love swimming directly into the current of a wavemaker.
-
Lid: They are powerful swimmers and can accidentally jump if spooked at night. A secure lid is recommended.
Dietary Needs
To maintain their immune system and prevent HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion):
-
Primary Diet: Daily Nori (dried seaweed) is essential. They need a constant supply of greens to stay healthy.
-
Supplemental: High-quality herbivore pellets, spirulina flakes, and occasional frozen mysis for protein.
-
Vitamins: Soaking their seaweed in Selcon or Garlic Guard helps prevent diseases and keeps their colors vibrant.
Why Choose the Sailfin Tang?
The Sailfin Tang is for the hobbyist with a large display tank who wants a hardworking, "showstopper" fish. Its ability to double its size visually by "flashing" its fins makes it one of the most interactive and impressive fish to observe. For a reef in Indonesia, it is a classic, hardy choice that represents the grandeur of our local oceans.
