Description

Orange Line Damselfish (Chrysiptera cyanea variant)

The Orange Line Damselfish is a stunning color variant of the classic Blue Devil Damselfish. While the standard C. cyanea is a solid, electric blue, the Orange Line variant (often a geographic morph or a specific sex-based trait) adds a fiery contrast to that sapphire base. It is an exceptionally hardy, high-voltage fish that is perfect for beginners, provided you are prepared for its spirited "Damselfish attitude."

Key Information

  • Common Names: Orange Line Damsel, Blue Devil (Orange variant), Sky-blue Damsel

  • Scientific Name: Chrysiptera cyanea

  • Origin: Indo-West Pacific (Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef)

  • Max Size: 8 cm (approx. 3 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8+ years

  • Temperament: Aggressive; very territorial for its size

  • Diet: Omnivore – Not picky at all

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Chrysiptera cyanea is famous for having one of the most intense "electric" blues in the ocean:

  • The Color: A brilliant, glowing neon sapphire blue.

  • The "Orange Line": In this specific variant (typically the males of certain regions), the tail and the rear portion of the belly are a bright, contrasting orange-to-yellow.

  • The "Devil" Eyes: They have small, dark eyes that give them a constant look of intense focus.

  • Sexual Dimorphism: Interestingly, females are often solid blue with a black spot on the dorsal fin, while males develop the orange tail and a more aggressive "mask."

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The "Little Giant": Like the Fiji Blue Devil, this fish does not realize it is only three inches long. It will fearlessly defend its chosen rock from fish ten times its size.

  • Aggression: It is highly territorial. It will claim a "territory" (usually a specific cave or crevice) and chase away anyone who enters.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe with corals. They are actually great for reefs because they are so active and visible.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with other "tough" fish like Tangs, large Wrasses, or Dottybacks. Avoid keeping them with shy fish like Firefish or small Gobies, as the Damsel will likely bully them into the shadows.

  • Social Structure: Only one per tank unless the tank is very large (285L+). If you want a group, you must provide plenty of visual barriers to break up territories.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75L (20 Gallons) for a single fish. Larger tanks help dilute their aggression.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of caves and "bolt holes." They love to have a "fortress" they can retreat to.

  • Water Quality: They are legendary for their hardiness. They can survive fluctuations that would be fatal to more sensitive fish like Leopard Wrasses.

  • Feeding: They are "pigs" at feeding time. They will eat anything: flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, and brine shrimp.

Why Choose the Orange Line Damsel?

The Orange Line Damsel is for the hobbyist who wants maximum color and activity with minimum maintenance. It is a "bulletproof" fish that will likely be the longest-lived inhabitant of your tank. Its electric blue and orange combination is one of the most striking "natural" color schemes in the hobby.
