Gold White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes)

The Gold White Cloud is often called the "Poor Man’s Neon Tetra," but its beauty is anything but cheap. It features a sleek, metallic gold body with a vibrant horizontal stripe and bright red highlights on the fins. Unlike many tropical fish, these minnows are sub-tropical, meaning they are very comfortable in cooler water. They are active, peaceful, and look spectacular when kept in large schools, where their golden scales catch the light as they dart through plants.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Gold White Clouds are schooling fish and must be kept in a group of at least 6–10 to feel secure and display their best colors. They spend most of their time in the upper and middle layers of the tank. They are exceptionally peaceful and make great tank mates for other cool-water species like Rosy Barbs, Zebra Danios, or Weather Loaches. They are also one of the few fish safe to keep with adult Cherry Shrimp.

Ideal Tank Setup

• No Heater Required: In most indoor homes, these fish do not need a heater. They actually live longer and are healthier in water that isn't too hot.

• Planted Aquarium: They look their best against a backdrop of green plants like Hygrophila or Java Moss.

• Oxygenation: They come from mountain streams, so they appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water with a moderate current.

• Substrate: Any dark substrate (sand or fine gravel) will make their gold coloration appear more intense.

• Lid: Like many small, active fish, they are capable of jumping if startled, so a secure lid is recommended.
