Description

Electric Blue Balloon Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi var. "Balloon")

The Electric Blue Balloon Ram is a vibrant, personality-packed dwarf cichlid that serves as a stunning centerpiece for smaller aquariums. Known for its compact, almost spherical body and its brilliant, solid neon-blue iridescence, this fish literally "glows" under standard aquarium lighting. Despite their small stature, they possess the intelligent and curious nature of larger cichlids, often interacting with their owners at the front of the glass.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Electric Blue Balloon Rams are peaceful and do best in pairs. Because of their modified body shape, they are slightly slower swimmers than standard Rams and should not be kept with overly aggressive or fast-moving fish that might outcompete them for food. Ideal tank mates include Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Pygmy Corydoras, and Otocinclus.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Stable Temperature: They are highly sensitive to "old water" and temperature drops. A high-quality heater is essential to maintain at least 27°C.

  • Soft Substrate: Sand is preferred, as they enjoy sifting through the bottom for food particles.

  • Hiding Spots: Use coconut husks, small terracotta pots, or dense clusters of plants like Anubias and Java Fern to provide security.

  • Gentle Flow: They prefer calm water; ensure the filter intake is safe for smaller, slower-moving fish.

  • Clean Water: Frequent small water changes (15–20% weekly) are necessary to keep nitrates low, as Rams have a low tolerance for organic waste.
