Description
Desjardini Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii)
The Desjardini Sailfin Tang, also known as the Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, is one of the most magnificent and imposing members of the Zebrasoma genus. While it looks similar to the common Pacific Sailfin Tang (Z. veliferum), the Desjardini is prized for its more intricate, "jeweled" pattern and its slightly larger adult size. It is a workhorse for the reef, spending its day grazing on nuisance algae, but it requires a massive amount of swimming room to accommodate its impressive finnage.
Key Information
-
Common Names: Desjardini Tang, Indian Ocean Sailfin Tang, Red Sea Sailfin Tang
-
Scientific Name: Zebrasoma desjardinii
-
Origin: Indian Ocean (Red Sea to South Africa)
-
Max Size: 40 cm (approx. 16 inches) — significantly larger than a Yellow Tang!
-
Lifespan: 10–15+ years
-
Temperament: Semi-aggressive; can be territorial toward other Tangs
-
Diet: Herbivore – Specialist in filamentous and macroalgae
-
Care Level: Easy to Moderate
Appearance & Identification
The Desjardini is a master of pattern and silhouette:
-
The "Sail": When threatened or displaying, it can extend its massive dorsal and anal fins, nearly tripling its vertical profile.
-
Patterns: Features a complex array of vertical bars and horizontal stripes. As they mature, the face and belly become covered in a stunning "freckled" or "honeycomb" spotting of gold and white.
-
VS. Pacific Sailfin: Unlike the Z. veliferum, the Desjardini has more distinct spotting on its underside and a darker, more intricate tail pattern.
Behaviour & Tank Compatibility
-
The Grazer: This fish is a constant gardener. It is highly effective at eating Hair Algae, Bubble Algae (Ventricaria), and other unwanted greens.
-
Aggression: Like most Zebrasoma, it can be "bossy." It is best to introduce it last to a system to prevent it from claiming the entire tank as its territory. It will likely fight with other Sailfin or Yellow Tangs unless the tank is massive.
-
Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are excellent for coral displays, though a 16-inch fish can accidentally knock over unsecured coral frags.
-
Personality: They are bold, active, and highly aware of their surroundings. They often learn to recognize their owner as the "food provider."
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 475L (125 Gallons) is required for a juvenile, but an adult must have 680L (180 Gallons) or more. They need a long tank (at least 6 feet) for horizontal swimming.
-
Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing, but ensure there are large open swimming lanes. Their massive fins need clearance so they don't constantly scrape against the rocks.
-
Flow: They thrive in high-flow environments with plenty of oxygenation.
-
Lid: While not prone to jumping, any large fish can splash or leap when startled. A secure lid is recommended.
Dietary Needs
Tangs require a diet high in vegetable matter to prevent HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion):
-
Seaweed: Provide dried Nori (Green, Red, and Brown) at least 3–4 times a week.
-
Prepared Foods: High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes enriched with Spirulina.
-
Vitamin C: Soaking food in vitamin supplements helps maintain their vibrant colors and strong immune system.
Why Choose the Desjardini Tang?
The Desjardini is for the hobbyist who wants a "Super-Sized" version of the Yellow Tang with a more sophisticated, "designer" pattern. It provides incredible utility by keeping the tank clean of algae while offering a dramatic visual presence that changes every time it flares its fins.
