Description
Koi Assorted (Cyprinus Carpio)
Koi are a beautiful mix of ornamental pond fish known for their vibrant colours, flowing movement, and peaceful nature. Originally bred in Japan from common carp, koi have become one of the world’s most popular pond fish due to their striking patterns and impressive size potential.
Each assorted koi is unique, with colour combinations that may include white, red, orange, yellow, black, blue, and metallic shades. Popular varieties can feature solid colours, multi-coloured patterns, or shimmering scales that stand out beautifully in ponds and large aquariums.
Size & Lifespan
Koi are fast-growing fish that can reach over 60 cm in length under proper conditions, with some individuals growing even larger in spacious ponds. With excellent care, koi are capable of living for several decades.
Temperament
These fish are peaceful, social, and highly active swimmers. They do well in groups and can become very interactive with their owners, often learning to recognise feeding times and even hand feeding.
Habitat Requirements
Assorted koi thrive best in large outdoor ponds with excellent filtration and stable water quality. They require plenty of swimming space, good oxygenation, and protection from extreme temperature fluctuations.
Recommended conditions include:
-
Spacious pond environment
-
Strong biological filtration
-
Moderate water flow
-
Stable water parameters
-
Plenty of aeration
Diet
Koi are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet consisting of high-quality koi pellets, fresh vegetables, insects, and occasional protein-rich treats. A balanced diet helps maintain strong growth and vibrant colouration.
Compatibility
Koi are generally compatible with other peaceful pond fish such as goldfish and larger coldwater species. Due to their adult size, they should not be kept with very small fish that may be accidentally injured or outcompeted for food.
Important Notes
-
Koi produce a significant amount of waste and require efficient filtration.
-
Young koi may appear dull in colour but often develop stronger patterns as they mature.
-
Suitable for ponds rather than standard indoor aquariums long-term.
