Description
Singapore Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus)
The Singapore Angelfish, also known as the Vermiculated Angelfish, is a unique and affordable member of the Chaetodontoplus genus. It is often referred to as the "poor man’s Scribbled Angel" due to its similar maze-like patterns, though it possesses a charm all its own. It features a striking tri-color gradient: a bright yellow face, a creamy white mid-section, and a dark grey-to-black posterior, all overlaid with fine, intricate "vermiculated" lines.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility
The Singapore Angelfish is an active, mid-sized angel that spends its day picking at rockwork for algae and tiny invertebrates. While it is smaller than many Pomacanthus species, it still requires plenty of swimming space. It is not reef-safe; it is particularly known for nipping at stony corals (LPS and SPS) and clam mantles. It generally gets along with other semi-aggressive fish like Tangs and Wrasses but may fight with other angelfish of a similar size or pattern.
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Mature Rockwork: An established tank with plenty of live rock is crucial for their grazing habits and providing a sense of security.
-
Caves and Hiding Spots: They can be timid when first introduced, so having multiple bolt-holes will help them settle in faster.
-
Moderate Flow: They prefer standard reef currents and enjoy swimming through the water column once comfortable.
-
Pristine Water: Like most angels, they are sensitive to high nitrates and ammonia, making a good protein skimmer essential.
Why Choose the Singapore Angelfish?
The Singapore Angelfish is a fantastic entry-point into the world of larger angelfish. It offers the complex "maze" pattern and interesting shape of a large angel but in a more compact size that fits in mid-sized home aquariums. Its distinct color-blocking (Yellow, White, and Grey) provides a great contrast against the blues and greens of a fish-only-with-live-rock (FOWLR) system.
