Scott’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus scottorum)

Scott’s Fairy Wrasse is often called the "King of the Fairy Wrasses" due to its large size, bold personality, and incredibly complex color patterns. Found across the South Pacific—with stunning variations appearing in the waters of Australia, Cook Islands, and Fiji—it is a prize for any reef keeper who has the space to accommodate its high-energy lifestyle.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Scott’s Fairy Wrasse, Multicolored Fairy Wrasse

  • Scientific Name: Cirrhilabrus scottorum

  • Origin: South Pacific (Fiji, Cook Islands, Coral Sea, GBR)

  • Max Size: 13–15 cm (approx. 5–6 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (One of the "bossiest" fairy wrasses)

  • Diet: Carnivore – Planktivore

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Appearance & Identification

Scott’s Wrasse is famous for having "everything everywhere all at once" when it comes to color:

  • The Body: Typically a deep teal or forest green base that can shift to navy blue depending on the angle of the light.

  • The "Splatter": Most males feature a large, irregular bright red or crimson blotch on their sides (flanks), looking almost like a splash of paint.

  • The Fins: The dorsal and anal fins are often edged in yellow or orange, while the tail (caudal fin) is typically rounded and bordered in a dark, contrasting color.

  • Geographic Variations: The Fiji variant is often more green/yellow, while the Australian/Cook Islands versions are much darker and more "moody" in their color.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Dominant Wrasse: Unlike many of the shy, tiny wrasses, Scott’s is bold and assertive. It will quickly establish itself as a dominant fish in the mid-water column.

  • Aggression: It can be quite territorial toward other fairy or flasher wrasses, especially those added after it has settled in.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They do not bother corals, clams, or anemones.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with larger, active fish like Tangs, Angelfish, and larger Wrasses. Avoid keeping them with very timid species (like Firefish or small Gobies) in a small tank, as they might feel intimidated by the Scott’s speed and size.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: Because they are large and very fast swimmers, a minimum of 285L (75 Gallons) is required. A 4-foot (120cm) tank is the bare minimum for them to feel comfortable.

  • Lid is Mandatory: This cannot be stressed enough—Scott’s Wrasse is a powerful jumper. Because of their size, they can easily knock over a loose-fitting lid. Ensure your screen or glass cover is weighted or securely fastened.

  • Rockwork: Provide a reef with plenty of caves and swim-throughs. At night, they lodge themselves into the rocks and create a mucus "sleeping bag" for protection.

  • Lighting: Their deep greens and teals look spectacular under LEDs with a high white/blue balance. Without sufficient light, they can look almost black.

Dietary Needs

They have a massive appetite and high metabolism:

  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily.

  • Preferred Foods: Frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. They also readily accept high-quality marine pellets and flakes.

  • Color Maintenance: Their vibrant colors (especially the red blotch) can fade in captivity if they aren't getting enough vitamins. Soak their food in vitamin supplements to keep them looking their best.

Why Choose the Scott’s Fairy Wrasse?

Scott’s Fairy Wrasse is for the hobbyist who wants a "tough" and visible wrasse that won't hide in the rocks. It is a hardy, long-lived fish that brings a sophisticated color palette to the aquarium. While it requires a larger tank and a very secure lid, its presence as a "showpiece" fish is undeniable.
