Description
Citron Coral Goby (Gobiodon citrinus)
The Citron Goby, also known as the Citron Clown Goby or Poison Goby, is a small but mighty personality for the reef aquarium. While many gobies are "sand-shifters," the Citron belongs to the genus Gobiodon, meaning it is a perching goby that naturally lives within the branches of Acropora corals. It is famous for its bright yellow color and its unique "toxic" defense mechanism.
Key Information
-
Common Names: Citron Goby, Citron Clown Goby, Poison Goby
-
Scientific Name: Gobiodon citrinus
-
Origin: Indo-Pacific (Red Sea to the Great Barrier Reef)
-
Max Size: 6 cm (approx. 2.5 inches)
-
Lifespan: 3–5 years
-
Temperament: Peaceful; though can be territorial toward other coral gobies
-
Diet: Carnivore – Requires small meaty foods
-
Care Level: Easy
Appearance & Identification
The Citron is the largest of the clown gobies and is easily distinguished from its cousins:
-
Body Color: A vibrant, solid canary yellow to lime green.
-
Graphic Lines: Features distinctive electric-blue vertical lines around the eyes and gills, and a horizontal blue line along the base of the dorsal and anal fins.
-
Mouth: It has a relatively large, "grumpy" mouth used to grab passing zooplankton and defend its perch.
Behaviour & Tank Compatibility
-
The Percher: Unlike many gobies, this fish has a ventral sucker disk (modified pelvic fins) that allows it to "stick" to rocks or coral branches. It spends 90% of its day sitting in plain sight, watching the tank.
-
Toxic Mucus: This goby produces a bitter, toxic mucus on its skin. Most predators that try to eat it will immediately spit it out, making it surprisingly safe even in tanks with larger, semi-aggressive fish.
-
Reef Safe (with a Caveat): In the wild, they live in SPS corals. In an aquarium, they may nip at the polyps of Acropora or Stylophora to clear a small patch for egg-laying. In small tanks, this can stress sensitive corals, but in large systems, the damage is usually negligible.
-
Tank Mates: Excellent for nano reefs. Compatible with Clownfish, Blennies, and peaceful Wrasses. They should be kept singly unless you have a mated pair, as they will fight other coral gobies for the best perching spot.
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: Ideal for small systems; a minimum of 40L–75L (10–20 Gallons) is perfect.
-
Rockwork & Corals: Provide plenty of live rock and, if possible, branching stony corals (SPS). If you don't have live corals, they are perfectly happy perching on "branchy" rock formations or artificial coral decor.
-
Flow: They prefer moderate flow. They are not strong swimmers and prefer to let the current bring food to their "throne."
-
Feeding: They are carnivores and need 2 small feedings per day. Offer frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Because they are "sit-and-wait" predators, ensure the food passes close to their perch.
Why Choose the Citron Goby?
The Citron Goby is the perfect "entry-level" boutique fish. It provides a massive pop of yellow in a tiny package and has a bold, interactive personality that far outweighs its size. Its hardy nature and unique perching behavior make it a favorite for those who want a fish that "looks back at you" from the rockwork.
