Black Cap Basslet (Gramma melacara)

The Black Cap Basslet is a deep-water jewel from the Caribbean, highly prized for its intense coloration and unique swimming habits. It features a brilliant magenta-to-purple body topped with a signature jet-black "cap" that starts at the snout and runs diagonally through the eye to the beginning of the dorsal fin.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Black Cap Basslet, Blackcap Gramma

  • Scientific Name: Gramma melacara

  • Origin: Tropical Western Atlantic (Caribbean, specifically deep reef drop-offs)

  • Max Size: 10 cm (approx. 4 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; peaceful with non-competitors but territorial toward other basslets

  • Diet: Carnivore – mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality meaty frozen foods

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Black Cap Basslet is a bold and hardy fish, but its deep-water origins influence how it interacts with its environment:

  • Vertical Swimming: Similar to the Assessors you’ve explored, the Black Cap often swims upside down or vertically against rock faces and cave ceilings.

  • Territoriality: While generally peaceful in a community setting, they will defend their favorite cave vigorously. They should not be kept with other members of the Gramma genus (like Royal Grammas) unless the tank is very large.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are ideal for coral tanks as they ignore all sessile invertebrates and clams.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent for tanks with Tangs, Angelfish, and larger Wrasses. Avoid keeping them with very timid fish or other similarly shaped bottom-dwellers in small systems.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Rockwork: This fish requires deep caves and ledges. It spends most of its time darting in and out of the rockwork and needs a secure "home base" to feel comfortable.

  • Lighting: Because they naturally live at depths of 30–60 meters, they can be light-sensitive. Provide plenty of shaded areas if your tank has high-intensity reef lighting.

  • Lid: Like all basslets, they are powerful jumpers when startled. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is a must.

  • Temperature: They prefer slightly cooler, stable temperatures (23–25°C) to mimic their deep-water habitat.

Why Choose the Black Cap Basslet?

The Black Cap Basslet is for the hobbyist who wants the hardiness of a Royal Gramma but with a more "prestige" aesthetic. Its deep, glowing purple is almost unmatched in the marine world. Because they are collected from deeper water, they are more expensive and rarer than common reef fish, making them a true standout centerpiece for a sophisticated Caribbean-themed or deep-reef display.
