Description

Royal Dottyback (Pictichromis paccagnellorum)

The Royal Dottyback, often confused with the Royal Gramma, is one of the most vibrant and high-contrast fish available in the hobby. While it looks like a "gem," it is famous for its exceptionally bold and feisty personality. This fish may be small, but it carries the attitude of a much larger predator, making it a "middleweight champion" in many reef tanks.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Royal Dottyback, False Gramma, Paccagnella Dottyback

  • Scientific Name: Pictichromis paccagnellorum

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Indonesia to Papua New Guinea)

  • Max Size: 6–7 cm (approx. 2.5 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–7 years

  • Temperament: Aggressive; highly territorial

  • Diet: Carnivore – Loves meaty foods and small crustaceans

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Royal Dottyback features a "dipped in paint" aesthetic:

  • Two-Tone Color: The front half of the body is a brilliant magenta-purple, while the back half is a stark, vibrant yellow.

  • The Transition: The line between the purple and yellow is sharp and distinct. This is the easiest way to tell it apart from the Royal Gramma, where the colors bleed into each other with a gradient of spots.

  • Fins: The fins are generally transparent to light yellow, allowing the body colors to pop.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Territoriality: This fish is a "denizen of the rocks." Once it claims a cave, it will aggressively defend it against intruders, even those twice its size.

  • The "Bull Terrier" of the Reef: It is known to bully peaceful fish like Firefish, small Gobies, and even Fairy Wrasses. It should be one of the last fish added to an aquarium to prevent it from claiming the entire tank as its territory.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe with corals. However, it may prey on small ornamental shrimp (like Sexy Shrimp) and small bristle worms.

  • Social Structure: Keep only one per tank. They are extremely aggressive toward their own kind and other Dottybacks unless the tank is very large (500L+).

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75L (20 Gallons) is sufficient for a single specimen.

  • Rockwork: Provide extensive live rock with many small holes and tunnels. They love to dart in and out of the rockwork and will spend most of their time patrolling the "inner sanctum" of your reef.

  • Lid: Like all dottybacks, they are incredibly fast and can easily jump through small gaps if they are chasing a rival or feeling threatened. A tight-fitting lid is essential.

  • Feeding: They are not picky eaters. They thrive on a diet of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality meaty pellets.

Why Choose the Royal Dottyback?

The Royal Dottyback is for the hobbyist who wants unbeatable color saturation and a fish that isn't afraid to show itself. It is one of the hardiest marine fish in existence, making it nearly "bulletproof" against common beginner mistakes. If you have a tank with other assertive fish like Tangs and Damsels, the Royal Dottyback will fit right in and hold its own.
