Description

Oscar Red Tiger (Astronotus ocellatus)

The Red Tiger Oscar is a powerhouse of personality and color. Native to the Amazon Basin, this variety has been selectively bred to enhance the red pigments, creating a striking "lava on coal" appearance. Often called "water dogs," these fish are among the most intelligent freshwater species. They will watch you from across the room, beg for food, and even "pout" by sitting at the bottom of the tank if they are unhappy with a water change or a move.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Red Tiger Oscar, Tiger Oscar

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (Highly territorial)

  • Diet: Omnivore/Predator – Requires high-protein pellets, frozen krill, and earthworms.

  • Care Level: Moderate (Requires large tanks and strict maintenance)

Water Parameters

Parameter Value
Temperature: 23–27°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: 5–20 dGH
Minimum Tank Size: 285L (75 Gallons) for one adult

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Red Tiger Oscars are territorial "kings" of their domain. They are best kept as a single specimen or in a mated pair. If kept in a community, the tank must be very large (500L+) and include robust tank mates that can hold their own, such as Silver Dollars, Jack Dempseys, or large Plecos. Caution: They will eat any fish that can fit in their mouth, including smaller cichlids or schooling fish.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Massive Filtration: Oscars have a huge bioload. Over-filtration is mandatory; use large canister filters or a sump system.

  • Sand Substrate: Sand is easier to keep clean and allows them to perform their natural digging and "redecorating" behaviors.

  • Heavy Decor: Use large driftwood and rocks. Do not use live plants unless they are very hardy (like Anubias) and secured to wood, as Oscars will uproot anything in the substrate.

  • Equipment Protection: Use heater guards. Oscars are known to headbutt or move heaters, which can lead to glass breakage.

  • Water Quality: High nitrates lead to "Hole-in-the-Head" disease. A 50% weekly water change is the gold standard for Oscar care.

Why Choose the Red Tiger Oscar?

The Red Tiger Oscar is for the aquarist who wants a pet with a soul. Their dark, brooding colors look incredible under high-quality aquarium lighting, and their interactive nature makes them feel like a true member of the family. If you can provide the space and the clean water they need, the Red Tiger Oscar is one of the most rewarding fish in the world to own.
