Description

Electric Neon Blue Acara (Andinoacara pulcher var. "Electric Blue")

The Electric Neon Blue Acara is a show-stopping cichlid that brings an intense, glowing blue presence to the aquarium. Unlike many other vibrant cichlids, this variety remains relatively small and far more peaceful, making it a viable candidate for community tanks. They are highly intelligent, often becoming "wet pets" that recognize their owners. As they mature, their scales take on a textured, almost 3D metallic appearance, complemented by orange-tipped dorsal fins.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Neon Blue Acara is remarkably docile compared to its cousins (like the Green Terror). They can often be kept with other medium-sized, peaceful community fish. Ideal tank mates include larger Tetras (Congo, Bleeding Heart), Corydoras, Bristlenose Plecos, and other mild cichlids like Severums or Rainbow Cichlids. While they are generally peaceful, they are still cichlids and may become territorial during spawning.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel is best, as they enjoy occasional digging, especially when preparing a flat stone for eggs.

  • Hiding Places: Provide plenty of caves using driftwood and rocks. This reduces stress and gives them a sense of territory.

  • Plants: Unlike many cichlids, Blue Acaras are relatively "plant-safe." You can use hardy plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Amazon Swords (though you may want to weight them down).

  • Filtration: Good biological filtration is important to keep nitrates low, which helps maintain their brilliant blue sheen.

  • Open Swimming Area: Ensure the middle of the tank is clear to allow them to display their colors.
