Description
Salvini Cichlid (Trichromis salvini)
The Salvini Cichlid is widely considered one of the most beautiful and vibrant species in the Central American cichlid hobby. Often referred to as the "Yellow Belly Cichlid," it displays a brilliant gold-to-yellow body accented by two bold black horizontal lines and vivid red patches on the belly and fins. While they are smaller than many other Central American giants, they possess a bold and feisty temperament, making them a spectacular centerpiece for keepers who enjoy the dynamic behavior of larger cichlids.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility
The Salvini is a highly territorial predator. Unlike dwarf cichlids, they have a "big fish" attitude and will defend their space vigorously. They are best kept with other robust Central American cichlids of similar size, such as Firemouths or Jack Dempseys, in a large aquarium. Avoid keeping them with small, peaceful fish like Tetras or Guppies, as the Salvini will likely view them as food. If kept as a breeding pair, they become even more protective of their territory.
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Ample Hiding Places: Use large rocks, driftwood, and ceramic pipes to create caves. This helps reduce aggression by breaking lines of sight.
-
Durable Decor: They like to rearrange their environment; ensure rocks are stable and not easily tipped over.
-
Hardy Plants: If you want greenery, use tough plants like Anubias or Java Fern attached to hardscape, as Salvinis may dig up rooted plants.
-
Efficient Filtration: As they are messy eaters, a high-quality canister filter or sump system is recommended to keep nitrogen levels low.
