Description

Bolivian Butterfly (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus)

The Bolivian Butterfly is a charming and resilient dwarf cichlid that offers a wonderful mix of elegance and personality. Known for its stocky build and long, flowing fin filaments, this fish develops beautiful red and orange edges on its dorsal and caudal fins as it matures. Unlike many other South American cichlids, the Bolivian Butterfly is quite "forgiving" regarding water chemistry, making it an ideal choice for community tanks where stability and peaceful behavior are prioritized.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Bolivian Butterfly is a social and non-aggressive fish. They are best kept in pairs or small groups in larger tanks. They spend most of their time "hopping" along the bottom of the tank in search of food. Because of their peaceful nature, they are compatible with a wide variety of tank mates, including Corydoras, Tetras, Rasboras, and even other peaceful dwarf cichlids. They are much less shy than other Rams and will often be front-and-center in the aquarium.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Open Foraging Areas: Provide areas of open sand or fine gravel where they can sift for food.

  • Structured Hiding Spots: Use driftwood, rocks, and caves to create a sense of security and territorial boundaries.

  • Live Plants: They appreciate a well-planted tank but do not tend to uproot or damage plants.

  • Moderate Water Flow: They prefer calm to moderate current; ensure the filtration is efficient but not overpowering.

  • Substrate Choice: A sandy substrate is highly recommended to support their natural "sifting" behavior.
