Orange Lined Triggerfish (Balistapus undulatus)
The Orange Lined Triggerfish, also known as the Undulated Triggerfish, is one of the most strikingly beautiful members of the Balistidae family—but it is also widely considered the single most aggressive fish in the marine aquarium hobby. While the Bursa Trigger you looked at is "mild" and the Clown Trigger is "notorious," the Undulated Trigger is a true "loner" that often requires a dedicated tank of its own.

Appearance & Identification
The Undulated Trigger is a masterpiece of geometric design:
-
The Pattern: A deep emerald-green to dark-brown base body covered in a mesmerizing array of diagonal, vibrant orange-to-yellow stripes.
-
The Tail: Features a distinct orange-to-red tail fin and a large black blotch at the base of the tail (caudal peduncle).
-
The Mouth: It has a smaller snout compared to other triggers, but its jaws are incredibly powerful, capable of crushing shells and even moving small rocks.
Behaviour: The "Solitary King"
-
Extreme Aggression: Unlike almost any other fish, an adult Undulated Trigger may decide one day that it no longer wants any neighbors. It is famous for killing tank mates much larger than itself.
-
Rearranging the "Code": This fish will aquascape for you. It will pick up rocks, bite chunks out of equipment, and pull up your sand bed. It is highly intelligent and easily bored.
-
Reef Safe: Absolutely NOT. It will eat every shrimp, crab, snail, and urchin in the tank. While it doesn't eat coral polyps directly, it will bite through coral skeletons just for fun or to find hidden prey.
-
Owner Interaction: They are very smart. They can learn to recognize their owner, but never hand-feed them. Their teeth can easily take a chunk out of a finger.
Ideal Tank Setup
-
Tank Size: A minimum of 285L–380L (75–100 Gallons). While they don't grow as massive as a Clown Trigger, they need the volume to dilute their waste and house their personality.
-
Filtration: They are "messy" eaters. An industrial-grade protein skimmer and heavy mechanical filtration are essential.
-
Equipment Protection: You must hide your heaters and cords. This fish will bite through a heater glass or a powerhead cord just to see what happens.
-
Rockwork: Provide large, heavy rocks. Use epoxy to glue them down, or the Trigger might push a rock against the glass and crack the tank.
Why Choose the Orange Lined Trigger?
The Undulated Trigger is for the hobbyist who wants a "Pet Predator". It is a fish with massive personality that dominates the room. It is best kept as a "Single Specimen Display"—a beautiful, intelligent, and dangerous "living art" piece.
