Tomini Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis)

The Tomini Tang, also known as the Tomini Bristletooth Tang, is one of the most practical and underrated "utility" fish in the hobby. Named after Tomini Bay in Sulawesi, Indonesia, it is a local favorite. Unlike the massive Sailfin or the aggressive Sohal, the Tomini stays relatively small and is famous for being a "detritus and film algae machine," making it one of the best tangs for a moderately sized reef.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Tomini Tang, Tomini Bristletooth Tang, Flame Fin Tang

  • Scientific Name: Ctenochaetus tominiensis

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Abundant in Indonesia, Philippines, and Palau)

  • Max Size: 15–18 cm (approx. 6–7 inches) — One of the smallest tangs

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; generally peaceful toward non-tangs

  • Diet: Herbivore / Detritivore – Specialized "Bristletooth" feeder

  • Care Level: Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Tomini is a subtle beauty that reveals its best colors as it matures:

  • The Body: A sophisticated tan-to-brownish-grey body that develops a beautiful blue or lavender hue under high-quality reef lighting.

  • The Fins: Its most striking feature is the vivid orange-to-yellow tips on the dorsal and anal fins, giving it the nickname "Flame Fin."

  • The Tail: Features a distinct, forked white tail.

  • The Mouth: Like all Ctenochaetus (Bristletooths), it has specialized "comb-like" teeth designed to scrape film algae and detritus off rocks and glass.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Glass Cleaner: While other tangs look for long hair algae, the Tomini focuses on film algae and cyanobacteria. It will spend all day "kissing" the glass and rocks, leaving little circular marks where it has cleaned.

  • Aggression: It is much less aggressive than the Acanthurus genus. However, it may be territorial toward other Bristletooth tangs (like the Kole Tang) or fish with similar feeding habits.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are arguably the best tangs for a reef because they also consume detritus that settles on coral bases.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with Clownfish, Wrasses, Anthias, and Blennies. Because of its smaller size, it can be housed in tanks where larger tangs would be too cramped.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 265L (70 Gallons). This makes it a great "Tang for the rest of us" who don't have 6-foot-long tanks.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock surface area. Since they are constant grazers, they need plenty of "grazing pasture" to keep them busy.

  • Water Flow: They prefer moderate to high flow. They are active swimmers and appreciate well-oxygenated water.

  • Hardiness: The Tomini is exceptionally hardy and often one of the last fish to be affected by stress or minor parameter swings.

Dietary Needs

Even though they eat film algae, they need supplemental feeding:

  • Primary Diet: Daily Nori (dried seaweed).

  • Supplemental: High-quality herbivore pellets and flakes.

  • The "Bristletooth" Perk: They are one of the few fish that will actively help control brown diatom algae and certain types of cyanobacteria.

Why Choose the Tomini Tang?

The Tomini Tang is for the hobbyist who wants a hardworking utility fish that doesn't outgrow the tank or bully every other inhabitant. It is a "local hero" from the Indonesian reefs that provides a massive service to your tank's ecosystem while offering a refined, elegant look.
