Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula)

The Percula Clownfish, also known as the True Percula, is the quintessential reef fish. Often confused with its nearly identical cousin, the Ocellaris Clownfish (A. ocellaris), the True Percula is native to the waters of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and parts of Northern Australia and Indonesia. It is highly prized for its vibrant colors and its iconic symbiotic relationship with sea anemones.

Key Information

  • Common Names: True Percula, Orange Clownfish, Black-finned Clownfish

  • Scientific Name: Amphiprion percula

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Indonesia, Solomon Islands, PNG, Great Barrier Reef)

  • Max Size: 7–8 cm (approx. 3 inches)

  • Lifespan: 10–20+ years in captivity

  • Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-aggressive (Territorial near their host)

  • Diet: Omnivore – Very easy to feed

  • Care Level: Easy

Appearance: True Percula vs. Ocellaris

In the trade, these two are often mixed up. Here is how to identify a True Percula:

  • The Black Outlines: True Perculas typically have much thicker black borders surrounding their white stripes. In some "Onyx" variants, the black can cover almost the entire body between the stripes.

  • The Eye: The iris of a True Percula is usually a bright orange, whereas the Ocellaris often has a darker, muddy-looking eye.

  • Dorsal Spines: True Perculas usually have 10 dorsal spines, while Ocellaris usually have 11.

  • The Color: They generally have a more "saturated," vibrant orange compared to the slightly more muted Ocellaris.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Anemone Hosting: Their preferred natural host is the Magnificent Sea Anemone (Heteractis magnifica) or the Giant Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla gigantea), but in home reefs, they frequently adopt the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor).

  • Social Structure: They are protandrous hermaphrodites. All are born gender-neutral; the largest and most dominant in a group becomes the female, the second largest becomes the breeding male, and the rest remain smaller males.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They are the "poster child" for reef tanks.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with almost all peaceful and semi-aggressive fish (Tangs, Blennies, Wrasses). Do not keep with large predators that can swallow them (like Groupers or large Lionfish).

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75L (20 Gallons) for a pair. If keeping them with an anemone, 115L+ (30+ Gallons) is recommended to ensure the anemone has stable water parameters.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of rockwork with "low flow" areas where they can rest at night.

  • Breeding: They are one of the easiest marine fish to breed in captivity. They lay eggs on a flat surface (usually a rock or the tank glass) near their host anemone, which the male then guards and "fans" until they hatch.

Dietary Needs

They are not picky eaters:

  • Diet: Accept high-quality marine flakes, pellets, frozen mysis, and brine shrimp.

  • Frequency: Feed 1–2 times daily.

  • Supplement: Feeding foods rich in carotenoids will help maintain the intensity of their orange coloration.

Why Choose the Percula Clownfish?

The True Percula is for the hobbyist who wants the classic, high-contrast look of the most famous fish in the sea. They are hardy, full of personality, and watching a pair bond with an anemone is one of the most rewarding sights in the hobby. Since you are in Indonesia, you have access to some of the most beautiful wild and captive-bred "Picasso" or "Onyx" variants of this species!
