Mueller's Butterflyfish (Chelmon muelleri)

The Mueller's Butterflyfish, often called the Black-finned Copperband, is the hardier, rarer, and more localized cousin of the famous Copperband Butterflyfish. Found primarily in the coastal waters of Northern Australia and parts of Indonesia, it is highly sought after by reef enthusiasts who want the "Copperband look" but with a significantly better track record for surviving in captivity.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Mueller’s Butterfly, Black-finned Copperband, Brown-banded Butterflyfish

  • Scientific Name: Chelmon muelleri

  • Origin: Northern Australia and the Coral Sea (occasionally Indonesia)

  • Max Size: 18–20 cm (approx. 7–8 inches)

  • Lifespan: 7–10 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-aggressive; shy initially

  • Diet: Carnivore – Specialist in small invertebrates and Aiptasia

  • Care Level: Moderate (Easier than the Copperband)

Appearance & Identification

While it shares the same elegant "long-nose" silhouette as the Copperband (Chelmon rostratus), you can easily distinguish the Mueller's by its darker tones:

  • The Bands: Instead of the bright orange bands of a Copperband, the Mueller's has dark chocolate-brown to black bands.

  • The Fins: The dorsal and anal fins feature a prominent black trim, giving it a much more "contrasty" and moody appearance.

  • The Snout: It possesses the same needle-like snout designed for reaching deep into rock crevices.

  • The Body: The base color is a silvery-white, which makes the dark bands pop under aquarium lighting.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • The Pest Hunter: Like the Copperband, Mueller's is an excellent biological control for Aiptasia (glass anemones). However, they are generally considered more aggressive feeders and are more likely to transition to prepared frozen foods.

  • Reef Safe (with Caution): They are generally safe with most corals, but they are specialized hunters of Tube Worms (Coco Worms/Feather Dusters) and may nip at clams or fleshy LPS corals if they are not well-fed.

  • Social Structure: Best kept singly. They are territorial toward other members of the Chelmon genus and other butterflyfish with similar shapes.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with peaceful to moderately active fish like Tangs, Wrasses, and Anthias. Avoid housing with overly aggressive "bullies" that might intimidate it during feeding.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 285L–380L (75–100 Gallons) is required. They need plenty of horizontal swimming room.

  • Rockwork: A complex reef structure is essential. They spend their day "probing" cracks and holes in the live rock for tiny crustaceans and worms.

  • Water Quality: They require stable, high-quality water with high oxygenation. They do not handle high nitrate levels well.

  • Lid: Like many butterflyfish, they are thin-bodied and can be jumpy. A secure lid is recommended.

Dietary Needs: The Advantage over Copperbands

The Mueller's is prized because it is usually easier to feed than the Copperband:

  • Initial Diet: Start with live blackworms or frozen bloodworms to trigger a feeding response.

  • Transition: They quickly move to frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood.

  • Feeding Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily in small amounts. Because of their specialized mouths, they cannot eat large chunks of food at once.

Why Choose the Mueller's Butterfly?

The Mueller's Butterfly is for the hobbyist who wants the utility of an Aiptasia-eater combined with the prestige of a rare species. It is a sophisticated, "connoisseur’s" fish that offers a unique aesthetic compared to the common Copperband. Its hardy nature (relative to other Chelmon species) makes it a much more reliable long-term inhabitant for an established reef tank.
