Engineer Goby (Pholidichthys leucotaenia)

The Engineer Goby, also known as the Convict Goby or Cuckoo Slinger, is one of the most misunderstood fish in the hobby. Despite its name, it is not actually a goby or an eel—it is the only member of its own unique family. It is a "living bulldozer" that will completely reshape your aquarium’s landscape. If you enjoy a fish with a fascinating social structure and "architectural" instincts, this is a brilliant addition, provided your rockwork is built to withstand its work.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Engineer Goby, Convict Goby, Convict Blenny

  • Scientific Name: Pholidichthys leucotaenia

  • Origin: Western Central Pacific (Philippines to the Solomon Islands)

  • Max Size: 30–35 cm (approx. 12–14 inches)

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful; though highly defensive of its tunnel

  • Diet: Omnivore – Primarily a carnivorous scavenger

  • Care Level: Easy

Appearance: The Pattern Shift

Like many of the fish you've looked at recently (such as the Blue Velvet Damselfish), the Engineer Goby undergoes a dramatic visual change:

  • Juvenile: Looks strikingly similar to a Coral Catfish. It has a jet-black body with a vivid white horizontal stripe. This is a form of mimicry to ward off predators.

  • Adult: As it grows, the horizontal stripe breaks into a vertical "maze" or "convict" pattern of black and white/yellow bars. Its body becomes long, eel-like, and very supple.

The "Engineer" Behavior

This fish is named for its obsession with tunneling:

  • Substrate Moving: A single Engineer Goby can move pounds of sand in a day. They pick up mouthfuls of substrate and "spit" them out elsewhere to create elaborate tunnel systems under the rockwork.

  • Rockwork Safety: Crucial Warning: You must place your live rock directly on the glass bottom of the tank before adding sand. If your rocks are sitting on top of the sand, the Engineer Goby will dig beneath them, causing the entire aquascape to collapse and potentially crack the glass.

  • Social Life: They are much happier in pairs or small groups. They will share a single tunnel system and can often be seen "peering" out of various entrances together.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe regarding corals. However, their constant digging can occasionally "dust" low-lying corals with sand.

  • Compatibility: They are very peaceful and rarely bother other fish. They spend 90% of their time in their tunnels, only darting out to grab food as it floats by.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with Tangs, Clownfish, and Wrasses. Avoid very small, bottom-dwelling gobies that might be accidentally "buried" by the Engineer's excavations.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 150L–200L (40–55 Gallons) for an adult. Because they are long and eel-like, they need a decent footprint more than vertical height.

  • Substrate: A thick sand bed (3–4 inches) is essential. A mix of fine sand and small rubble helps them reinforce their tunnel walls.

  • Feeding: Not picky. They love frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and sinking pellets. As they get larger, they will appreciate small pieces of chopped seafood.

  • Lid: They are surprisingly prone to jumping, especially at night when they might explore the surface. A secure lid is mandatory.

Why Choose the Engineer Goby?

The Engineer Goby is for the hobbyist who wants an eel-like presence without the predatory risks of a Moray Eel. They are incredibly hardy and disease-resistant. Watching a pair work together to "renovate" their home is one of the most rewarding behaviors to witness in a home reef.
