Carpenter’s Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri)

The Carpenter’s Flasher Wrasse is a quintessential "first wrasse" for reef enthusiasts. It is celebrated for its manageable size, hardy nature, and the spectacular "flashing" displays performed by males. During these moments of courtship or territorial posturing, the male’s colors literally seem to "turn on," intensifying into a glowing orange and neon blue as it flares its ornate, multi-filamented fins.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Carpenter’s Flasher Wrasse, Redfin Flasher Wrasse, Pink Flasher

  • Scientific Name: Paracheilinus carpenteri

  • Origin: Western Pacific (Philippines and Indonesia)

  • Max Size: 7.5–8 cm (approx. 3 inches)

  • Lifespan: 5–7 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful; shy when first introduced

  • Diet: Carnivore – Plankton-picker requiring meaty foods

  • Care Level: Easy

Appearance & Identification

The Carpenter’s is often confused with the McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse, but they have a distinct structural difference:

  • The Dorsal Spines: The defining feature of a male Carpenter’s is the presence of 2 to 4 elongated red filaments (rays) on the dorsal fin. In contrast, the McCosker’s typically has only one.

  • Coloration: Males feature a vibrant orange-yellow body with several horizontal electric-blue stripes. Females and juveniles are more subdued, often appearing as a soft pink or solid orange without the elaborate finnage.

  • Flashing: When displaying, the body color shifts toward a brilliant red-orange, and the blue stripes appear to "pulse" with light.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Social Structure: They are highly social and thrive in a harem setup (one male with two or more females). Keeping females is the best way to ensure the male "flashes" his colors frequently.

  • Peaceful Dwellers: This is one of the most peaceful wrasses available. It will not bother corals, clams, or even small ornamental shrimp like Sexy Shrimp.

  • The "Bully" Risk: Because they are so peaceful, they are easily bullied by more aggressive wrasses (like Six-Line Wrasses) or boisterous tank mates. They should be one of the first fish introduced to a new system to allow them to establish confidence.

  • Nighttime Security: Unlike Halichoeres wrasses that bury in sand, Flasher Wrasses do not bury themselves. They sleep in the rockwork, creating a protective "mucus cocoon" in a crevice to mask their scent from predators.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 115L (30 Gallons) for a single specimen, but 200L (55 Gallons) is much better for a harem or community setting.

  • Lid is Mandatory: Like all flasher wrasses, the Carpenter’s is an extraordinary jumper. They can fit through even the smallest gaps in a lid. A tight-fitting mesh or glass top is the only way to prevent "carpet surfing."

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and overhangs. They need places to wedge themselves in at night and dart into if they feel threatened during the day.

  • Flow: They prefer moderate flow and open swimming lanes in the mid-to-upper water column where they can cruise and display.

Dietary Needs

They have high metabolisms and are active swimmers; they should be fed 2–3 times daily.

  • Preferred Foods: Small meaty items such as frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and copepods.

  • Transitioning: They typically accept high-quality marine flakes and pellets once they are comfortable in their environment.

Why Choose the Carpenter’s Flasher Wrasse?

The Carpenter’s Wrasse is the perfect choice for a hobbyist who wants constant motion and "wow" factor in a reef tank. It provides a level of interactive beauty that few other small fish can match, especially when a male is prompted to show off. Its reef-safe credentials and hardy nature make it a reliable and rewarding inhabitant for both nano reefs and large-scale displays.
