Two-Stripe Damselfish (Dascyllus reticulatus)

The Two-Stripe Damselfish, also frequently called the Reticulated Dascyllus, is the subtle, textured sibling of the Three-Stripe Damsel. While it shares the same "bulletproof" reputation and feisty attitude as its cousins, it is prized by hobbyists for its intricate scale patterns and slightly more "earth-toned" aesthetic. It is a fantastic choice for a rugged reef or a predator-heavy tank where a small fish needs to hold its own.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Two-Stripe Damsel, Reticulated Dascyllus, Headband Damsel

  • Scientific Name: Dascyllus reticulatus

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Indonesia to the Line Islands)

  • Max Size: 8–9 cm (approx. 3.5 inches)

  • Lifespan: 8–12 years

  • Temperament: Aggressive; highly territorial

  • Diet: Omnivore – Opportunistic and greedy

  • Care Level: Very Easy

Appearance & Identification

The "Reticulated" part of its name refers to its beautiful scale detail:

  • The "Two Stripes": It features a black vertical band through the eye/head and a second, often fainter, black band running through the rear of the body and dorsal fin.

  • The Reticulated Pattern: The main body is a creamy-grey to greenish-tan. Each scale is outlined in a darker color, creating a "honeycomb" or "net-like" appearance across the skin.

  • The Glow: The edges of the dorsal and anal fins often have a brilliant neon-blue trim that glows under blue actinic lighting.

  • The Tail: Typically translucent or pale, which distinguishes it from the solid black fins of other Dascyllus.

Behaviour: The "Little Warrior"

  • Territorial Anchor: Like the Three-Stripe, this fish claims a specific piece of the reef (usually a coral head) and will defend it with vigor. It is known to "chatter" or make clicking sounds when defending its territory.

  • SPS Symbiosis: In nature, they are almost always found living within the branches of Acropora or Pocillopora corals. They help the coral by providing nutrients (waste) and circulating water through the branches with their constant movement.

  • Aggression Warning: Do not let its small size fool you. It will chase away fish many times its size. It is best to keep them as the last addition to a tank or only with other aggressive fish.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe with corals, though they can be "clumsy" and may knock over un-glued frags while defending their home.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 115L (30 Gallons). While small, their aggressive nature requires enough space for other fish to escape their sightline.

  • Rockwork: Provide branching structures (like dead coral heads or porous rock) to mimic their natural habitat.

  • Feeding: Extremely easy. They will greedily accept anything you drop in: frozen mysis, brine shrimp, flakes, and pellets.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with Tangs, Dottybacks, or larger Wrasses. Avoid keeping them with peaceful "socialites" like Firefish or Pajama Cardinals.

Why Choose the Two-Stripe Damsel?

The Two-Stripe is for the hobbyist who wants "Natural Detail." Its reticulated scales look incredible up close, and its behavior—constantly guarding its favorite coral—adds a dynamic layer of biological interaction to the tank. It is a hardy "survivor" that can withstand almost any beginner mistake.
