Linear Blenny (Ecsenius lineatus)

The Linear Blenny, also commonly referred to as the Lined Blenny or Dot-Dash Blenny, is a charming and inquisitive bottom-dweller from the Indo-West Pacific. It is highly valued for its "comical" facial expressions and its functional role as a specialized algae grazer. Unlike the open-water swimming Fang Blennies, the Linear Blenny spends its time perched on rockwork or peering out from crevices, adding a sense of curiosity and personality to the lower levels of the aquarium.

Appearance & Identification

The Linear Blenny features a distinctive color-blocked aesthetic that makes it easy to spot:

  • Linear Pattern: A horizontal "dot-dash" or linear pattern of yellow-to-white stripes (or rectangular blotches) runs along the side, separating the dark and light halves.

Behavior & Tank Compatibility

  • The Sentry: This fish is famous for its perching behavior. It will claim several "lookout spots" on the live rock and hop between them, watching the activities of the tank.

  • Reef Safe (with Caution): Generally considered reef-safe, but underfed individuals may occasionally nip at SPS coral polyps (like Acropora) or clam mantles.

  • Aggression: It is peaceful toward non-similar tank mates but can be highly territorial toward other blennies or fish with similar body shapes. Keep only one per tank unless they are a mated pair.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent with Clownfish, Anthias, and peaceful Gobies. Avoid housing with aggressive "bullies" that might intimidate it into hiding.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 115L (30 Gallons) is recommended.

  • Rockwork is Essential: Requires ample live rock with numerous small holes and crevices for hiding and perching. This also provides the natural microalgae it needs to graze.

  • Lid: Like its cousins, the Linear Blenny is an expert jumper. A secure, tight-fitting lid is mandatory.

  • Dietary Needs: While it will eat nuisance algae, its diet should be supplemented with spirulina, nori, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Occasional mysis or brine shrimp can be offered as a treat.
