Barrier Reef Chromis (Chromis nitida)

The Barrier Reef Chromis, also known as the Yellowback Puller or Shining Puller, is a sophisticated and peaceful alternative to the ubiquitous Green Chromis. Endemic to the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea, it is highly prized for its unique, shimmering bicolored appearance. Unlike many of its more aggressive damselfish relatives, C. nitida maintains a relatively gentle personality into adulthood, making it an excellent "dither fish" that encourages shier tank mates to venture out into the open.

Key Information

  • Common Names: Barrier Reef Chromis, Yellowback Puller, Shining Puller

  • Scientific Name: Chromis nitida

  • Origin: Eastern Australia (Great Barrier Reef to Lord Howe Island)

  • Max Size: 7–9 cm (approx. 3–3.5 inches)

  • Lifespan: 8–15 years

  • Temperament: Peaceful; one of the least aggressive damselfishes

  • Diet: Omnivore/Planktivore – Requires small, frequent feedings

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Appearance & Identification

The Barrier Reef Chromis is easily distinguished by its sharp, diagonal division of colors:

  • Bicolored Body: A bold, dark diagonal stripe runs from the eye to the back of the dorsal fin. Above this line, the fish is a vibrant yellow-brown to gold; below, it is a shining, pearly silver-white.

  • Fin Details: Features a deeply forked "V-shaped" tail with black margins along the upper and lower edges.

  • Shimmering Effect: Its name nitida is derived from the Latin for "shining" or "polished," referring to its high-reflectivity silver flanks.

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

  • Shoaling Nature: These are social fish that must be kept in groups (ideally 6 or more). In the wild, they form large aggregations to feed on zooplankton; in captivity, keeping them in a group reduces infighting and stress.

  • Reef Safe: 100% Reef Safe. They do not bother corals, clams, or ornamental invertebrates.

  • Tank Mates: Excellent companions for Anthias, peaceful Wrasses, and larger Angelfish. While peaceful, they may show minor territoriality toward other damselfish species in smaller tanks.

  • Dither Fish: Their constant activity in the mid-to-upper water column helps calm other nervous fish, signaling that the environment is safe from predators.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 190L (50 Gallons) is recommended for a small shoal. Larger volumes are better for maintaining stable water parameters.

  • Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock with nooks and crannies for sleeping and refuge, but ensure there is vast open swimming space in the center.

  • Flow: They thrive in strong water currents, which mimic their natural habitat on outer reef edges and help keep food suspended.

  • Feeding: As active planktivores, they have high metabolisms and should be fed 3 times daily. Offer a variety of frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality flakes.

  • Quarantine Note: Like many Chromis, they are susceptible to the parasite Uronema marinum. A proper 28-day quarantine period is highly recommended.

Why Choose the Barrier Reef Chromis?

The Barrier Reef Chromis is for the hobbyist who wants the social behavior of a schooling fish with a more "high-end" aesthetic than standard green species. Their dual-tone coloration provides a striking visual "cut" in the water column. While they are less common in shops and typically carry a higher price tag due to their limited geographic range, their hardiness and peaceful nature make them a premier choice for established reef systems.
