Description

Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus)

The Majestic Angelfish, also known as the Blue-Girdled Angelfish, is widely considered one of the most beautiful and easily identifiable large angelfish in the world. It features a stunning contrast of bright orange on the body and fins, bordered by thick bands of electric blue. A distinctive blue "girdle" covers the midsection and face, giving the fish its regal name. Unlike many of its larger Pomacanthus relatives, the Majestic remains relatively smaller, making it a favorite for moderately sized large-scale systems.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Majestic Angelfish, Blue-Girdled Angelfish

  • Scientific Name: Pomacanthus navarchus

  • Origin: Indo-Pacific (Indonesia to the Great Barrier Reef and Micronesia)

  • Max Size: 25–28 cm

  • Lifespan: 15–20 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; can be shy initially

  • Diet: Omnivore – Requires specialized sponge-based marine foods, algae, and meaty proteins

  • Care Level: Moderate to Difficult

Water Parameters

Temperature: 22–27°C pH: 8.1–8.4 Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025 Minimum Tank Size: 500L+

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

The Majestic Angelfish is notably more reclusive and less aggressive than other large angels like the Emperor or Blueface. It spends much of its time weaving through rockwork rather than patrolling open water. It is not reef-safe, as it will graze on sponges, tunicates, and both stony and soft corals. However, it is often cited as being "more reef-safe" than its cousins, as some individuals may leave certain noxious soft corals alone. Ideal tank mates include peaceful Tangs, Anthias, and larger Wrasses.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Ample live rock with numerous large caves and overhangs is essential to accommodate its shy nature.

  • An established aquarium with natural sponge growth is highly beneficial for initial acclimation.

  • Stable water chemistry and pristine quality are mandatory; this species is particularly sensitive to high nitrates and copper.

  • Moderate water flow and subdued lighting areas help the fish feel secure and display its best colors.

  • Efficient protein skimming to handle the bioload while maintaining high oxygen levels.
