Description

Herald's Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi)

The Herald's Angelfish, also commonly known as the Yellow Pygmy Angelfish or False Lemonpeel Angelfish, is a vibrant and hardy member of the dwarf angelfish family. It is distinguished by its uniform, brilliant yellow coloration across its entire body and fins. Unlike the Lemonpeel Angelfish, which it closely mimics, the Herald's Angelfish lacks the blue ring around the eye and blue edges on the fins, making it a "cleaner" yellow aesthetic for the aquarium.

Key Information

  • Common Name: Herald's Angelfish, Yellow Pygmy Angelfish, False Lemonpeel Angel

  • Scientific Name: Centropyge heraldi

  • Origin: Western and Central Pacific (Southern Japan to the Great Barrier Reef)

  • Max Size: 10–12 cm

  • Lifespan: 10–15 years

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive; territorial toward other yellow or dwarf angels

  • Diet: Omnivore – spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, and high-quality frozen herbivore preparations

  • Care Level: Easy to Moderate

Water Parameters

Temperature: 22–27°C pH: 8.1–8.4 Specific Gravity: 1.020–1.025 Minimum Tank Size: 115L+

Behaviour & Tank Compatibility

Herald's Angelfish are active and curious, constantly grazing on algae throughout the rockwork. While they are generally peaceful toward non-related species, they can become quite territorial once established, especially toward other dwarf angelfish or fish with similar oval shapes and yellow colors. They are considered "reef safe with caution," as they may nip at large polyp stony (LPS) corals, clam mantles, and some soft corals if their dietary needs are not met or if they become bored.

Ideal Tank Setup

  • Ample live rock with numerous crevices and caves for hiding and natural foraging

  • An established aquarium with natural microalgae growth to support their grazing habits

  • Strong filtration and consistent water parameters to maintain health and color vibrancy

  • Sufficient open swimming space to accommodate their energetic nature
