Myriophyllum papillosum Red Milfoil is a hardy Watermilfoil species native to Australia. This variety gets its name from the striking bright red colouration of its stems when grown emersed. This feature makes it one of the most attractive Myriophyllum species to grow in outdoor ponds. Grown underwater, the plant takes on a different appearance, displaying entirely lime-green foliage.

In the aquarium, the leaves of this native Myriophyllum fall somewhere between the lacy appearance of M. simulans and the coarser leaves of M. muricatum. For aquarists searching for a Myriophyllum species with red stems when submerged, M. muricatum would be a good choice.

Growing Myriophyllum papillosum 'Red Stem' is relatively straightforward, whether it's submerged in your aquarium or grown out of the water. It flourishes under moderate to high lighting conditions, and is adaptable to various water parameters. Unlike some other aquatic plants, it doesn't demand overly specific care requirements.

This versatile plant also tolerates a wide range of temperatures. It will grow in aquariums with water temperatures of up to 32°C, but is also highly cold-tolerant and can cope with frost when grown in ponds.

For aquarists after a vibrant, fluffy green aquarium plant, or pond keepers looking to introduce an attractive aquatic plant with eye-catching red stems to their pond, Myriophyllum papillosum 'Red Stem' is a great choice. Its adaptability to various conditions, striking red stems when grown emergent, and tolerance for both warm and cold temperatures make it a valuable addition to aquariums and ponds alike.
